Completing the White Card course (CPCWHS1001 — Prepare to work safely in the construction industry) is a mandatory step for owner builders in NSW, QLD and WA. Depending on your state, you can complete it at a face-to-face seminar near you, join a live virtual seminar from home, or — in WA — complete it fully online.
Here is where and how each state’s White Card works, so you can pick the option that suits your build timeline.
In NSW, self-paced online White Card courses are no longer permitted — you complete the White Card either at a one-day face-to-face seminar or by a live virtual seminar from home.
Seminars run at 9 locations across Sydney and wider NSW, on weekdays and some Saturdays. You choose your preferred date and location at any time after enrolling — no need to lock in a day before you start.
Map shows the Sydney region. Your nearest of the 9 seminar locations is chosen at the time of booking.
Prefer to stay home? Join the same one-day seminar live from your computer. You will need a computer with internet access and a webcam, and PPE for the practical assessment (hard hat, eye protection, ear protection and a high-viz vest). Your White Card is issued immediately upon completion — our fee includes the $34 SafeWork card issue charge.
Queensland owner builders also complete the White Card via a face-to-face seminar or a live virtual seminar — self-paced online courses are not permitted in QLD.
The 5-hour face-to-face seminar is available at seven venues across South East Queensland and regional centres:
The virtual seminar runs for approximately six hours (breaks included), three times a week including Saturdays. You must be physically located in Queensland on the day, and you will need a computer with a webcam, internet access, and a hard hat, eye and ear protection and a high-viz vest (all available from Bunnings). Your White Card is issued immediately upon completion.
WA is the most flexible state: the White Card course (CPCWHS1001) is completed fully online, typically in a single day. There are no venues to travel to and no seminar to attend — you work through the course at your own pace with a computer with internet access and a webcam.
As with the other states, you will need PPE for the practical assessment: a hard hat, eye protection, ear protection and a high-viz vest. Your certificate is generated instantly when you finish, so you can move straight on to your owner builder approval.
Whether you choose a venue or a virtual seminar, booking works the same way:
